Richmand was the political and political center of the Confederate States of America. Because of this, it was a prime target for the Union. In 1862, Major General George McClellan would attempt to siege and occupy Richmond, but did not prevail in doing so as his Peninsula campaign was put to a halt; all thanks to the Confederate Generals "Stonewall" Jackson and J.E.B. Stuart's cunning and ruthless strategy. It was also one of the few major industrial centers and suppliers for the war effort for the South during these years. Eventually it would fall to General Ulysses S. Grant, who in his own right would end the war completely.
